Couples Therapy

About Couples Therapy

Whether called marriage counseling, couples counseling or couples' therapy is often up to the the therapist you see or the insurance company you use.  While couples counseling focuses on a relationship versus an individual, the treatment is often the same as relationships involve two people who each have their own individual problems and symptoms (i.e. behavior, emotions, conflicts, etc.) that effect their relationship with one another.

In couples therapy, I will try to help you and your partner identify the conflict issues within your relationship.  I will help you decide what changes are needed, (in the relationship and in the behavior of each partner), for both of you to feel happier within the relationship.

Examples of some of these changes may include:

  • Learning different ways of interacting within the relationship;
  • Identifying individual changes related to personal emotional or psychological issues;
  • Learning how to communicate more effectively, and how to listen more closely;
  • Learning how to avoid competing with each other or battling constantly for control within your relationship;
  • Learning how to identify common life goals and how to work together to obtain them;
  • Learning how to share responsibilities within your relationship.

The process of Couples Therapy is sometimes just like individual therapy, sometimes just like mediation and sometimes purely educational.  But, when you combine these components, couples therapy can be highly effective!
