How do I know if I "need" therapy?

There really is no set rule for whether or not an individual or a couple should seek therapy.  But, ask  yourself if you, your partner , or your child could use help with:

  • Persistent anger, anxiety, irritability, sadness, hopelessness, loss of appetite, inability to sleep or difficulty functioning.
  • Fear or worry making it difficult to function to your full potential.
  • Difficulty with decision making.
  • Feeling unheard in your relationship or simply numb about life.
  • Acting out at home or school, ADD/ADHD issues, nightmares or even bedwetting.

If you answer yes to any one of the above, you may benefit from therapy.

Is my privacy assured in therapy?

Yes!  Except where covered by specific laws or your signed authorization, the facts pertaining to your therapy sessions are strictly protected!

How do I talk to my child about counseling?

Children and young adults can be very resistant to the idea of family or individual counseling.  Click here to obtain a handout that may be useful in discussing counseling with your child/ren.

How does counseling work?

There are a variety of counseling approaches tailored for different problems. In general, counseling is a collaborative process that involves joint problem-solving in a confidential context. Almost all counseling is based upon:

  • The development of a trusting and open relationship between the client and the therapist;
  • Honest exploration of feelings, needs, and concerns; and
  • Efforts to try new solutions to old problems.
